HISTORY

“Gunma-chan” is the mascot of Gunma. It’s a pony and a play on “Ma” in Gun-ma. So cute!  At our favorite ski lodge in Gunma, this is the water cup of choice, so we tracked it down and tasted it. Turns out it was pretty good. Approaching the brewery was a bit more of a challenge though as they are the oldest brewery in Gunma. SERVING Best drank after skiing. Gunma is landlocked so you get more game meats and stews. Try making Chanko Nabe which may actually stick to your bones. OK to warm this sake.   BREWERY Founded in 1690 with 18 generations of continuous ownership, Makino tend to use local rice and yeast and specialize in amino rich sake such as Kimoto and Yamahai. Their sake are designed to pair with foods. Don’t let them down!
